Game of the Week: Texas at Oklahoma State
Texas at Oklahoma State, 6:30 PM, Fox
Our game of the week this week might not be on the national radar, but it’s definitely on ours. Bowl eligibility is on the line as the resurgent Texas Longhorns head up to Stillwater to face the sliding Cowboys of Oklahoma State. The winner will get a key sixth win given the difficult schedules both teams have remaining; Texas hosts TCU while Oklahoma State must travel to Baylor and Oklahoma.
The Longhorns have rebounded from a rough start under first year coach Charlie Strong, winning three of four games after a 2-4 start that only included wins over North Texas and Kansas. The defense has remained a strong point as Texas sits fourth in the Big 12 in scoring defense and first in passing defense.
However it has been the offense that has gained new life under streaky sophomore QB Tyrone Swoopes, who took over for David Ash upon Ash’s retirement from football earlier this season. One of the best athletes in the country at his position, Swoopes has used both his arm and legs to help give the Horn offense a new life.
Key Stat: The Cowboys have struggled to protect QB Daxx Garman during the losing streak, giving up 25 sacks this season (102nd in the country). The Longhorns lead the Big 12 in sacks with 30.
The Cowboys meanwhile seem to be heading in the wrong direction, dropping three in a row after a 5-1 start that had some prognosticators predicting a Big 12 championship run. The schedule has been difficult but the Cowboys definitely had higher expectations for this young but talented team.
Given the youth of both teams, there’s no question they could each benefit from the extra practice days leading into the bowl, making Saturday’s matchup even more important. We’ll be especially interested given both of these teams could be right in our wheelhouse come selection day.
Which team will get that all important sixth win? Tune in 6:30 pm tomorrow night on Fox and find out!
