Game of the Week: Texas at Kansas State
Texas at #11 Kansas State, 11AM, ESPN
This week’s game of the week features the Texas Longhorns traveling to Manhattan, Kansas to take on the first place Kansas State Wildcats. This Big 12 showdown will kick off at 11AM CST on ESPN.
The Longhorns enter this game likely needing a win to eventually reach the six win level and guarantee a bowl game after the season is over. Despite being thinned out by injuries and suspensions, Texas has stayed in a number of games against teams that, on paper, should be superior. The Longhorns’ defense has carried them in most of these near upsets, holding Baylor’s quick strike offense to no points in the first half and holding Oklahoma to just 232 total yards in a close Red River Shootout loss.
New Head Coach Charlie Strong seems to have the Longhorns moving in the right direction, and finally breaking through this weekend would go a long way to ending up with a relatively successful first season for the former Louisville coach.
The 11th ranked Wildcats are undefeated in the Big 12, the sole owners of first place in a conference that features six teams with two conference losses or less. The only blemish on Kansas State’s record is a tough out of conference loss to Auburn, currently ranked 5th in the AP Poll, in which the Wildcats missed three field goals, turned the ball over three times, and only lost by six points.
Kansas State is led by senior QB Jake Waters. The 6-1, 210 dual threat is averaging just over 300 yards per game of total offense and leads the Big 12 in rushing yards by a quarterback with just over 60 per game. On defense, the Wildcats remain as solid as they always have been under the ageless Bill Snyder, leading the Big 12 in rushing defense and sitting second in the conference in scoring defense.
Can the Wildcats continue their run atop the Big 12? Or will the Longhorns finally break through after a number of close calls? Tune into ESPN first thing tomorrow morning and find out!
