Exactly How Fast Is Jakeem Grant?

When the Texas Tech Red Raiders came to Houston for the Advocare V100 Texas Bowl, I was truly excited for the matchup between Tech and LSU. I love bowl games with teams that are stylistically different.

Well, LSU and Texas Tech were certainly…uh, different.

Most people in the building wanted to see LSU star RB Leonard Fournette and he certainly didn’t disappoint. He accounted for 256 total yards, rushing for 212 yards on 29 carries. He piled up four rushing touchdowns and found the end zone a fifth time on a 44-yard screen pass, his only reception on the day.

However, when I drove home that night, I was buzzing about one guy, perhaps the fastest player I could ever recall seeing on a field. That was Texas Tech WR Jakeem Grant. I’ve seen LSU play hundreds of football games and it’s rare when someone can actually out-run its defense.

Grant did that throughout the night. He scored on a 46 yard touchdown early in the game in which he roasted one of the best defensive backs in the SEC. Every time he touched the rock, the building just held its breath. However, when the NFL Scouting Combine sent out invitations this past February, Grant didn’t receive an invite.

He decided that he’d just show everyone what they missed at his Pro Day on campus in March. Video surfaced of Grant’s 40-yard dash and the controversy began. There were a couple of stopwatches that measured Grant at 4.21 in the 40. But, the video was slowed and matched to a stopwatch too and it said 4.12. That would be the fastest 40-yd dash ever recorded, right next to former Raider RB Bo Jackson. Some people didn’t believe the time until the video surfaced and even then, some didn’t believe that the 5’7” mighty mite actually broke 4.2.

To me, it didn’t matter. Fast is fast and Jakeem Grant showed everyone how fast he actually is. Fortunately, those of us that saw him against LSU didn’t need a video for confirmation.
